Why is it that other trades like electricians, plumbers, can actually get along while my local competitors either ignore me, slander me or give my techs the old “one finger salute” when they drive by? I honestly don’t understand the pettiness.
Can it be that they truly think that there is not enough work out there for all of us? It seems to me if you want more and put the effort in to getting it, it is there.
Sincerely Puzzled in Topeka
A lot of it is self-image, Sincerely. The industry as a whole and many carpet cleaners on an individual basis are very insecure and have really low self esteem. (I always say that no one ever dreamed of becoming a carpet cleaner when they were a kid.) Folks who lack self confidence tend to view everyone else as a threat when in fact their biggest problem is facing them their mirror every morning.
Here is the “good news/bad news” of this industry: The good news? It is easy starting out as a carpet cleaner and almost anyone can do it. The bad news? It is easy starting out as a carpet cleaner and almost anyone can do it!
Just one more reason to participate in industry internet discussion forums, trade associations and other industry training sessions. (I have heard the five day seminars are the best! LOL) It is very ego boosting to see that it’s not just the marginal fringes of society who become carpet cleaners! Very nice to see you posting here and hope to see you and yours at SFS soon.
Steve
P.S. I can still remember two scared 23 year old kids walking into their first trade show exhibition back in the 70’s. Wow! We were giddy (do people still say that?) with excitement to see the possibilities of this industry and where we could go.
This looking at the man in the mirror doesn’t have anything to do with MJ does it?

Nice website Steve!
Yeah, Richard, you can moon walk … in your dreams! I have always used MJ in the SFS seminar as an example that money alone does not necessarily bring happiness! I guess I’ll just stay with the illustration. His sad death doesn’t change the basic principle.

PS Hope you check in often, Richard. We can’t match (nor do we want to) the traffic on the internet bulletin boards. However, this site will be a constantly updated “resource portal” that complements other more “conversational” forums.
